Whatever the reason, tis the season that many of us get the most out of our UTV’s. Hunting, camping, snow riding and more; winter is a great season to be outdoors. So, whether you are planning a rural vacation with the family this winter or a get away with the boys, you may be shipping that sucker to get it home in time for the holidays. As weather conditions make roads slick and travel precarious at times, it is important to adequately prepare your UTV for shipping in order to minimize the chances that it is damaged, and ensure that you will be compensated in the event that it is. While these steps are designed to help you prepare your UTV for a shipping company, they can also be useful if you are planning on hauling it yourself.

Your first step in preparing your UTV to be shipped is full-body wash. Take your time and get off any mud that has accumulated and dried. As you work, note any existing scratches, dents, dings or other damage and document this with both a written account and by taking photos. Be sure to date this documentation. Next, gather any records you have of past body work that has been done to the vehicle and assemble this information into a comprehensive description of the vehicle’s current condition. When you hand over the UTV to the carrier it is a good idea to briefly go over this information with him so both parties are aware of the condition.

After you have established and documented the current condition of your UTV, remove any loose items that could possibly be lost while on the trailer. The UTV may be shaken during transport causing these to fall off, so double check that you’ve got everything.

The final step is a quick mechanical check-up. Even though the vehicle will probably not be driven during shipment, the carrier may have to ride it on or off the trailer so it is important that it is in appropriate condition.
